Treats
First of all, you are almost certainly going to be working with treats. Depending on who you speak to, you will get a whole range of different ideas. From purpose bought treats to strips of meat and even dried liver. There are many different ideas out and about. But, what I suggest that you consider is that especially at first you could be giving your dog a lot of treats. If you are giving them something that they are not used to eating that has a high calorie content you could be giving them an awful lot to eat! Stick the treats into a bag that you carry in a certain pocket, or attached to your belt, or better still in a waist belt. You want to be able to instantly retrieve a treat the moment it is needed so that the dog can associate good behaviour and treat.

A last word on treats - when buying treats pick dog treats over human treats. Chocolate is not good for dogs - so avoid human sweets, no matter how much your dog seems to want them!

Collars
Collars are how you apply your control to your dog, it is where you attach a lead of some sort and where the force is applied. A simple collar is all that is recommended by a lot of dog trainers and many do not agree with the choke type collar. If the basic collar is not working with your dog, then a halter that fits around your pet's head, similar to a muzzle but without being restrictive, can be used for training sessions. When pulled, this forces your dog's head around slightly and emphasises the commands.

Leads
Where would we be without the lead! A short lead for training exercises and a long lead for more distance work. Extendable leads are very much available, but not such a good idea for training. You will want a good quality lead that is comfortable for you to pull on when instructing your dog and turning him or her. A narrow handle might dig into your hands and a metal chain can be a distraction to your pet with the noise that it makes.

Toys
It is useful to have a favourite toy, especially one that can make a noise. Then carry the toy when you are out and you can show it to your dog and encourage them back or distract them from whatever is causing them to go astray! If you choose carefully, you might even be able to lay your hands on a toy into which you can insert some treats to help reinforce its popularity with your four legged companion, before you head out of doors.

If the dog is going to be in there an extended period of time, say while you're away at work, then he needs something to do. If he doesn't have something readily available to chew on he will just destroy his bedding, creating a mess for you to clean up and more expense by having to replace his bed every time he gets bored. You can't withhold a bed as that would be cruel and the dog wouldn't understand.

Should Dogs Remain Outdoors Or Indoors?

Dogs, like wolves, are animals that come in packs. When they are born, there would be a litter of puppies that makes them a pack as they grow. What Should I Teach My New Puppy?

You should be happy with your new puppy. I can see the excitement. Spend time with her so she gets to know you and learn that you are the leader of the pack. Play with her, use her name often, so she starts to understand that it refers to her. Make sure you establish a regular routine for her - feed her at the same times, get up and go to bed at the same time each day etc. to help her settle in. A regular routine will also help with toilet training and there will be fewer accidents.

You can start to teach a young puppy simple commands and responses. This is the basis of obedience training - you give a command, the dog responds and you praise her. With a puppy, praise is all the reward she needs, as she wants to please you more than anything else. Be generous with your praise.

Start with using her name to get her attention and praise her when she looks at you. Repeat this simple exercise frequently, in many different places, outside and inside. Always praise her lavishly when she looks at you because that is all you wanted her to do. Your dog's name is never a command; use her name to just get her attention.

While it isn't safe to take your pup out in public until her immunization schedule is completed, she does need to experience different sights and sounds and smells. Carry her around your neighborhood, introduce her to the neighbors and let her experience the big, wide world. Never put her on the ground, unless you are sure that no dog has been there - like a friend's yard, if they have never had a dog. Remember, she is not yet fully protected from all the diseases dog can catch.

You can also teach her to sit, to accept wearing a lightweight collar and to become used to being on a lead. Keep training very short and frequent, and focus on having fun with your pup. Be consistent and gentle; remember she is still a baby.

Don't allow your puppy to mouth or bite you or other members of the family, no matter how cute it might be. This could develop into an assertive behavior, she could hurt someone or maybe she might already think she is top dog. Discourage her from the beginning; remove your hand from her mouth and put a toy in her mouth; tell her "good dog."

Make sure there is nothing left lying around that is inappropriate for a dog to eat or chew. Puppies are notorious chewers; make sure she has a couple of small, safe dog toys to for this purpose. If you leave you new sports shoes on the floor and she chews them, it is your fault, because the dog doesn't know they weren't for chewing (even if you told her!).

Ensure your pup's safety by keeping electrical cords and other potentially dangerous things out of reach. Make sure there are no small items around that she could choke on. Puppies are like babies, and everything goes into their mouths; it is how they explore new things.
